Press Release - Bryson Vows to Cut Sales Tax

Calls for Sales Tax Cut on Food and Rules out Increase in the Gas Tax

State Senator and Republican nominee for Governor Jim Bryson visited Bristol today to unveil his plan to reduce the sales tax on food. Sen. Bryson also ruled out an increase in the gas tax, something Gov. Bredesen has repeatedly refused to do. Tennessee currently has a revenue surplus of $260.8 million.

"Tennesseans have overpaid and it is time to return their money," said Sen. Bryson. "Phil Bredesen claims he believes in fiscal responsibility, but the responsible thing to do would be to return some of Tennessee's surplus to the taxpayers. As Governor, I will fight for hardworking Tennesseans by cutting the sales tax on food and I will veto an increase in the gas tax."

In 2002, the General Assembly approved a once cent increase in the sales tax that has resulted in billions of dollars of new revenue in the last four years. During the gubernatorial debates, Governor Bredesen said he would not support a reduction in the sales tax and said he would be willing to increase the gas tax. He is also actively campaigning for state income tax sponsor Bob Rochelle (D-Lebanon).
